The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, has arrived in Liberia for the first time.
Upon arrival at Roberts International Airport, Mr. Grossi was greeted by senior government officials, including the Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency. This visit marks a significant milestone in the expanding partnership between Liberia and the IAEA.
Liberia has strengthened its collaboration with the IAEA over the years by pledging to safely and securely utilize nuclear technology. The country has ratified several key international legal instruments under the IAEA framework, demonstrating its commitment to the peaceful applications of nuclear science.
These agreements lay the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in areas crucial to Liberia's development. In a statement to journalists upon his arrival at RIA, Director General Grossi emphasized the broad areas of ongoing cooperation between the IAEA and Liberia, including the application of nuclear technology in agriculture, healthcare improvements, energy planning, and environmental protection.
He noted that these initiatives aim to support Liberia's national development objectives using peaceful nuclear science. The trip is expected to include high-level meetings with government officials, site visits to project locations, and discussions on expanding future collaboration.
As Liberia continues to harness nuclear science for development, Director General Grossi's visit underscores the IAEA's commitment to supporting the country's efforts in building a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future.
