Senate Demands Accountability on Local Council Spending – Invites Minister of Internal Affairs and Others for Clarification

The Liberian Senate has invited the Minister of Internal Affairs, County Superintendents, and County Council members to address allegations of illegal financial spending at the local level.

During its 34th day sitting on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Senate instructed its Secretary to notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the involved local leaders to appear before the Committee of the Whole (full Senate).

This decision follows a communication from Senator Simeon Boima Taylor of Grand Cape Mount County, who expressed concern over the lack of accountability in County Council spending. Senator Taylor accused some local leaders of excluding elected county officials from financial decisions, alleging that they withdraw and spend funds without proper consultation and set their own salaries without submitting reports.

He noted that these leaders, particularly City Council members, often ignore lawmakers' roles in project implementation, citing the Local Government Act to justify their actions.

To resolve these issues, Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has instructed the secretary of the Senate to extended an invitation to the concerned officials to clarify the situation and determine a way forward in accordance with the Local Government Act.

The Minister of Internal Affairs and the local leaders are expected to appear before the Senate on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
