A Venezuela native, Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, is facing charges related to an altercation with an ICE agent during a traffic stop in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Officials report that Hurtado-Cariaco, allegedly a member of the Tren de Aragua gang, was being pulled over as part of an ICE operation. Initially, he complied, exiting his vehicle with raised hands.
However, the situation escalated when agents attempted to handcuff him. Hurtado-Cariaco resisted violently, slamming an ICE agent's head and elbow into the pavement, causing serious injuries, including a possible concussion and broken elbow.
He then put the agent in a chokehold, ignoring commands to release her. A second agent intervened, applying a counter-chokehold to stop the assault. Hurtado-Cariaco fled on foot but was arrested an hour later.
He had reportedly entered the U.S. illegally in 2023, was removed, re-entered in 2024, and was released with a notice to appear. The injured agent was treated and released to recover at home.
Hurtado-Cariaco faces charges of attempted murder of a federal officer and assault with infliction of bodily injury, potentially carrying a penalty of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
His next hearing is scheduled for June 24.
