NIR Authorities Summoned Over Delays in National ID Card Issuance
The House of Representatives has summoned authorities of the National Identification Registry (NIR), to appear this Thursday, June 19, 2025. Lawmakers want answers on ongoing delays in issuing National ID cards.
The request, led by Representative Moima Briggs-Mensah of Bong County District #6, follows public outcry over slow service even after citizens complete registration and payment for their identification cards.
Representative Briggs-Mensah says the delays are affecting rural residents, government workers, and vulnerable groups who she said now struggle to access banking services.
She also criticized Executive Order No. 126, which mandates the use of National ID cards for all government financial transactions. The order, she says, unfairly sidelines the Liberian passport—still a valid national document.
During its appearance, the NIR is expected to explain the causes of the delays, outline challenges, and present a clear plan to resolve the backlog. Lawmakers also want to explore how they can support improvements in ID service delivery.
Representative Briggs-Mensah further urged the Legislature to advocate for the passport to be recognized as an alternative valid ID for financial transactions.
